Our first night in Maui, we wanted to eat somewhere authentic. We chose someplace in our guidebook near the hotel. We were staying in Ka’anapali and we went to the Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina.
Started out with some coconut shrimp and local beers. That’s them above. It was delicious, but part of me wonders if it was really that delicious, or the experience of eating with an ocean view and breeze makes it seem delicious.
For dinner, we all got the classic mixed plate. In Hawaii, the mixed plate is standard fare: pork, two scoops of rice, and macaroni salad. The Aloha Mixed Plate did not disappoint.

There’s kalua pork (buried in a pit and cooked) and lau lau (pork steamed in taro leaves). There little containers are tomatoes, poi (taro root) and haupia (flan-like coconut dessert).
If you ever go to Hawaii, get a mixed plate at least once. It’s a delicious, authentic experience.
